- Filter the list, or hide the pinyin or the meaning to test yourself.
- Download the list as CSV for flashcards, then practise writing sentences with the new words.
The HSK changed in 2026
A new HSK syllabus was released in November 2025, and HSK exams follow it worldwide from July 2026. It keeps the nine levels of the 2021 standard but needs fewer words at the lower levels: 300 words for HSK 1 instead of 500, and 5,400 words for HSK 6 instead of 5,456. The advanced levels 7–9 share one list of 5,600 new words, 11,000 in total.
Many textbooks, such as the HSK Standard Course, still follow HSK 2.0, the six-level test with 5,000 words. If you study with one of them, use the HSK 2.0 lists; each word there shows its level in the new syllabus.
How to learn a level
- Learn in small sets: 10–20 new words a day is enough to finish HSK 3 in about two months.
- Test yourself: hide the meaning and say it out loud, then hide the pinyin and read the characters.
- Use the words: write sentences with them. Words you use are the ones you keep.
Where the words come from
- New HSK (2025 syllabus): the vocabulary of the official HSK 考试大纲 (Syllabus for the Chinese Proficiency Test), released by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation in November 2025 and in force from July 2026. We list all 11,000 entries with the syllabus's own pinyin and order. Some words have two entries, one for each reading or use (本 as a measure word at HSK 1, 本 as a noun at HSK 5).
- HSK 2.0: the six-level lists used by the HSK until 2026, from the open complete-hsk-vocabulary data set. A few words are listed twice, once per reading (得 de and dé).
- 2021 standard: shown only for comparison (“was HSK 3”), from the same data set.
- Meanings: from CC-CEDICT, an open Chinese–English dictionary. For each word an AI model chose the dictionary senses that fit its HSK reading and part of speech, and a second AI chose them again without seeing the first answer; where they disagreed, a third review decided. A few words the dictionary doesn't cover have a short AI-written meaning, marked for review by a person.

Frequently asked questions
How many words are in each HSK level?
In the new syllabus (exams from July 2026): HSK 1 has 300 words, HSK 2 adds 200 (500 in total), HSK 3 adds 500 (1,000), HSK 4 adds 1,000 (2,000), HSK 5 adds 1,600 (3,600), HSK 6 adds 1,800 (5,400) and HSK 7–9 add 5,600 (11,000). In HSK 2.0 the totals are 150, 300, 600, 1,200, 2,500 and 5,000.
Which list should I study?
The one your exam or course uses. HSK exams follow the new 2025 syllabus from July 2026. If your textbook or class is based on HSK 2.0, study its lists first; the new syllabus contains most of the same words, often at a different level.
Why is HSK 1 now 300 words and not 500?
The 2021 standard set 500 words for level 1. The 2025 exam syllabus, which the tests follow from July 2026, lowered it to 300 to make the first levels easier to reach. Lists online that still say 500 words follow the 2021 standard.
Can I download the lists?
Yes. Each level page has a Download CSV button. The file opens in Excel, Numbers and Google Sheets and imports into Anki and Pleco. The meanings are from CC-CEDICT and may be shared under the same CC BY-SA 4.0 licence.
Why do some words appear twice?
The official syllabus lists a word once for each reading or use, sometimes at different levels: 本 is a measure word at HSK 1 (一本书) and a noun at HSK 5 (笔记本). We keep both entries so the counts match the syllabus.
