Writing in the new HSK
The new HSK (first regular exam 13 December 2026) has a writing section from HSK 2 upwards. HSK 2 and 3 test single characters; HSK 4, 5 and 6 ask for real sentences and essays:
| Level | Writing tasks | Time |
|---|---|---|
| HSK 4 | 5 sentences with given words; an essay (80+ characters) | 25 min |
| HSK 5 | a picture story (100+); an essay (200+) | 40 min |
| HSK 6 | practical writing (150+); an argumentative essay (300+) | 45 min |
How to get a high band
- Do exactly what the task asks: use every required word and cover every point.
- Write enough: answers under the minimum length can't reach the top band.
- Keep it correct rather than fancy: the guide marks correct, fluent Chinese, not deep ideas. Simple sentences you are sure of beat ambitious ones with mistakes.
- Link your sentences: 首先、然后、最后, 因为……所以……, 虽然……但是…… make the writing coherent.
How grading works
The grader follows the official HSK writing marking guide, which places answers in high, middle or low bands rather than giving exact points. Your answer gets a band on each criterion, and the overall band is the lowest of them, because the top band needs every criterion met.
- Task: the length and the required words are counted, not guessed. An AI model checks whether you wrote about the topic.
- Grammar and characters: your text is proofread by the same AI proofreading our Grammar Checker uses. A wrong character (错别字) is a character swapped for one that sounds the same, like 在 → 再. Three or more put the answer in the low band, as in the official guide.
- Coherence: an AI model judges how connected and logical the writing is, and must quote your text for everything it says. Anything it says about words that aren't in your text is removed.
This is a practice estimate made with AI, not an official HSK score. The new HSK hasn't published its writing marking scheme yet; we follow the published guide and will update when it does.
Privacy: your text is sent to our server and an AI model to be graded. We don't store it. We keep only the task, the length and the bands, to check that grading stays fair.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an official HSK score?
No. It's a practice estimate made with AI, following the official HSK writing marking guide. Use it to find and fix your mistakes before the exam.
Why do I get a band instead of a score?
The official HSK marking guide describes writing in bands (high, middle, low), and the new HSK hasn't published points for its writing tasks. A precise number would look more exact than any grader can honestly be.
How are the characters counted?
Only Chinese characters count towards the minimum length. Punctuation, spaces, numbers and Latin letters don't.
How many answers can I grade?
Three a day for free without an account. If you're logged in to the Grammar Checker, grading uses your account's character allowance instead.
Is my text saved?
Your text is sent to our server and an AI model to be graded, then discarded. We keep only the task, its length and the bands, to check that grading stays fair.
